National Rum Punch Day

… National Rum Punch Day*.  Well, alrighty then.  Can’t say I’m terribly excited by this celebration, but I guess there’s plenty of y’all out there who can’t get enough rum punch.  Whoever you are, this day’s for you.

I randomly heard that yesterday was ” International Talk Like A Pirate Day” … aarrgh, matey … couldn’t they have coordinated these two days a little better?

Music for a September Day:  Inspired by pirates and rum, I close my eyes and can’t decide between Johnny Depp or Keith Richards. So let’s go with Keith Richards & Mick Jagger, Waiting on a Friend?

The Meat House Burgundy Wine Steak Tips

A friend showed up last week with 2 butcher-wrapped mystery packets with the verbal instructions to put them in the freezer for a future grill test.  I don’t love freezing good fresh meat, but far be it from me to argue with a hunter/ gatherer/bringer of meat.  He’d strongly disagree saying I can sass back with the best, but that’s another story.

The little packages came from The Meat House, a new place in Chapel Hill across from The Siena Hotel (and the old site of Applebee’s, I believe).  Touted as your “neighborhood butcher and grocer” The Meat House promises “to be excellent, consistent, and customer focused in everything we do!”  Guess what? They do!

They happily offer samples and my friend convinced them to give him two, promising that he’d bring someone back into the store with him next time.  That next time was yesterday and that someone was me.

It’s a cool little store with practically everything you need for a meal.  Wine, beer, sides, condiments, etc. Even ice cream.  Maybe the nicest surprise of all were the local selections – Chapel Hill Creamery cheeses, Maple View Farms ice cream, Guglhupf bread, Kerala Curry – alongside their exotic meat selections of buffalo, venison, and ostrich.

The two sample packages rounded out the newly purchased marinated steak tips, a couple of sausages (sweet Italian & bratwurst – because you can never have too much meat), marinated mushrooms ready-to-sautee, and Maple View Farms Chocolate Chip Ice Cream.  Waiting at home was a bottle of Chianti in a straw basket.

Maybe it was the beautiful night, maybe it was the wine, maybe it was the company, but it was all tender and delicious.  I’ll go back and, as my friend did, I’ll carry it forward and take someone else to introduce them to The Meat House.

Music to cook by on a warm September evening:  Simon & Garfunkel’s Concert in Central Park.

Today is … National Cream-Filled Donut Day! * September is National Chicken, Honey, Mushroom, Papaya, Potato, Rice Month.  Can you create a recipe using all those ingredients in one dish?

Side Trips

Driving a narrow two-lane blacktop in Catawba County yesterday morning singing along to The Avett Brothers Ten Thousand Words at the top of my lungs, I rounded a gentle hilly curve and came about this close to joining a carnival.  No, I mean, really … a carnival caravan was directly in front of me crawling along at maybe 12 mph.  Braking, I slowed in just enough time to avoid becoming one with a Tilt-a-Whirl.

After the initial blast of adrenalin that was not nearly as good as if I had actually been ON the ride, I took a deep breath and fell into a lazy, not-in-a-hurry pace behind the caravan.  In the 15 minutes before I turned onto the ramp heading east on I-40, I relived a lifetime of fair (state and county) and carnival memories.  A rubber monkey tied to a long stick. Goldfish swimming unsuspectingly in a clear plastic bag. Felt hats embroidered with your name across the crown. Stomach drop from the first swirling spin of the Octopus. Lights in every color flashing and blinking.  Intoxicating aromas of cotton candy, hot dogs, candy apples. Was there really a two-headed calf in there? Who in their right mind swallows a sword anyway?

The amusement ride in front of me was almost sad in it’s disassembled state.  Paint faded and peeling, no where to hide in the bright sunlight. But on it went toward a place of mystery and imagination.

There was even a brief moment when I thought “hey, I’m not working, I could run away and join the carnival,” never having completely forgotten that one of my first dreams in life was to be a bareback rider in the circus (way too much Toby Tyler; or, Ten Weeks With a Circus for those of you who remember).

I don’t know where they had been, nor where they were headed, but for a few short miles, I was with going with them.  Memories and all.

Me, Julia & Cilantro

I don’t hate cilantro lovers, I just don’t like cilantro. In fact, I’m downright envious that I can’t enjoy whatever it is that everyone raves about. My tastebuds translate the herb into soap or dishwater. So I was both vindicated and excited to enjoy this exchange between Julia Child and Larry King back in 2002.

CHILD: I don’t like cilantro.
KING: What is that?
CHILD: It’s an herb that it has a kind of a taste that I don’t like.
KING: Is there an everyday food you hate, like broccoli?
CHILD: No, I don’t think so. I mean, if it’s properly cooked and properly served, I can’t think of anything I hate.
KING: So you’ll eat…
CHILD: Except cilantro and arugula I don’t like at all.
KING: Arugula?
CHILD: They’re both green herbs, they have kind of a dead taste to me.
KING: So you would never order it.
CHILD: Never, I would pick it out if I saw it and throw it on the floor.

Don’t hate me, pity me the chemical imbalance that causes it.  I hate cilantro, but it’s not my fault.
